LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A driver who weaved dangerously across lanes while fleeing the California Highway Patrol was arrested in Gorman Wednesday afternoon after a successful spike strip attempt and a PIT maneuver brought an end to a nearly hour-long chase.

In a desperate attempt to escape capture, the suspect ran across the 5 Freeway lanes after the pursuit but was soon apprehended by authorities.

AIR7 HD was over the pursuit just after 3:20 p.m. as a driver in a dark-colored Volkswagen sedan was speeding on the northbound 170 Freeway in the North Hollywood area.

There were multiple instances where the suspect would swerve across lanes amid traffic or squeeze past cars.

A spike strip and a PIT maneuver brought an end to a chase in Gorman.

The chase transitioned onto the 5 Freeway, where the suspect passed Valencia and into Castaic. With almost no cars nearby, the suspect was able to reach speeds around 90 to 100 mph.

CHP, however, managed to take out two of the suspect's tires after a successful spike strip attempt.

With the car slowing down, CHP used a PIT maneuver to stop the car and end the chase in the Gorman area. But the suspect refused to surrender.

He began running away from law enforcement and ran across lanes. He appeared to try to carjack other drivers on the road before officers were able to track him down and arrest him.

Authorities say the suspect was initially wanted for an unsafe lane change.
