GARDENA, Calif. (KABC) -- A man just released from jail after serving time for domestic violence was shot dead in the unincorporated area of Gardena Wednesday.

Authorities responded to the 3300 block of Marine Avenue at 5:10 a.m. James Scott, 44, of Venice was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbor Charles Dorsey witnessed much of what happened overnight.

He says Scott had just been released from jail on Tuesday after serving multiple days for a domestic violence incident involving his wife, Jenea Parks, who lived with him at the home.

"This was my son's father and now my son don't have no father," Parks said in tears. "It happened so quick. All me and my son heard was pops."

On Tuesday night, there was more arguing - enough for deputies to respond to the home at least twice. Each time, they left.

Shortly after, he heard gunfire. Dorsey thinks Parks' father is the suspect.

"When I first seen them arguing, first thing that came to my mind something bad is going to happen to one of those two people," Dorsey said.

Meanwhile, Parks denies those claims.

"We was going through some little things here and there, the whole night, whatever, but I was trying to help him get on his way," Parks said, adding that she doesn't know who shot her husband.

A man has been detained in connection to the case. No further details were immediately released.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
