CYPRESS PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A burned body was discovered in a Home Depot parking lot in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles Thursday morning, prompting an investigation by police.

Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to reports of a rubbish fire shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Figueroa Street. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered human remains and a large drum on fire.

Arson investigators were called to help in the investigation.

"We do know that this area is very populated all the time. It's a very popular area. It's got freeways in the area, well-traveled roadways. Even though this happened around 2 a.m., we are hoping that somebody may have been driving by, saw something. Of course we'll be checking for any surveillance cameras," said Meghan Aguilar of the LAPD.

The identity of the victim was not released. Investigators were looking into whether the victim may have been a homeless person due to debris or possible belongings found near the body.

No further information was immediately released.
