Neighbor says elderly couple, who were hit by car at South LA bus stop, were always happy

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A neighbor of an elderly man, who was killed after being hit by a car involved in a chain-reaction crash at a South Los Angeles bus stop, spoke out Tuesday.

Neighbor Terrell Hayward said the man and his wife, who was also struck by the car, were well-liked by people in their apartment complex that wasn't far from the crash site.

On Monday afternoon, the man, his wife and another woman in her 50s, were hit by a Range Rover while waiting at a bus stop near 54th and Figueroa streets. A Buick Regal and the Range Rover crashed, causing the Range Rover to jump the sidewalk and hit the three people.

The elderly man died from his injuries, while the two women were listed in critical condition. Authorities did not say if the man was married to one of the women.

Hayward said he'd know the family for years and always had a smile on their face.

"That's what hit me the most. I was almost in tears because they was always a happy family. I didn't think they deserved to be in a situation that they're in..." he said.

The driver of the Regal, believed to be a woman, fled the scene. Authorities said it was unclear which car caused the crash as both were traveling northbound on Figueroa. They said it is possible the Range Rover driver veered into the Buick's lane, but the Buick may have been traveling at a high speed.
