LA protest features Trump pinatas

NORWALK, Calif. (KABC) -- On the same day Donald Trump met with Mexico's president and delivered a major policy speech on immigration, an immigrant-rights group in Los Angeles held a protest against the GOP candidate, complete with pinatas in his likeness.

A group of young girls associated with the protest brought their Trump piñatas inside the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office, where they were picking up voter registration forms. They were hoping to help U.S. citizens register and vote against Trump.

"We don't want Donald Trump to be the president," said 8-year-old Katelyn Contreras, whose mother recently became a naturalized citizen and will vote for the first time in November. "Because he's going to send the parents all the way to Mexico and leave the kids here."

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) held a protest near the registrar's office. Some members were also critical of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto for meeting with Trump.

"President Pena Nieto in Mexico and Donald Trump have decided to send in the clowns," said Jorge-Mario Cabrera, with CHIRLA. "They think this is a circus show. Instead of real solutions they're just trying to gain political points on the backs of immigrant families who are suffering."

But not all Latinos oppose Trump or his tough immigration policies.

Jorge Herrera is the co-founder of Latinos for Trump and he said he is seeing growing support for Trump in the Latino community.

"Let's get one thing straight: he did not generalize all Mexicans. If you look at the speech, you listen to his words, he says that there are good people who come over, and that they're not all Mexican and they come from other regions."
