Father arrested in fatal stabbings of son, child's mom in Anaheim

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 24-year-old man was booked on suspicion of homicide Tuesday evening after allegedly fatally stabbing his 6-month old son and the child's mother in Anaheim on Monday.

Police had been searching for Kwame Carpenter since around noon Monday, when officers were called to an apartment complex in the 2600 block of W. Ball Road in Anaheim for an assault in progress.

Investigators found 24-year-old Moureen Gathua-Carpenter suffering from serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The baby boy, identified as Kyan Gathua-Carpenter, was rushed to a local trauma center, where he died from his wounds.

Anaheim police said a security guard at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital spotted a man that fit Carpenter's description around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. The guard alerted a Santa Ana police officer who happened to be at the hospital on an unrelated matter.

That officer and Fountain Valley police located Carpenter asleep in a parked 2001 Lincoln Town Car Signature on hospital grounds. When officers tried to take him into custody, Carpenter refused to surrender and drove his car into a Santa Ana police vehicle as well as an unrelated parked car, damaging both.

Carpenter fled the scene in his car. According to investigators, a Fountain Valley police officer fired two rounds at Carpenter when he drove his car toward the officer. No one was injured.

Police then chased Carpenter north on Euclid Street, where he crashed into a parked minivan. The driver of the minivan suffered injuries. The extent of the injuries were not immediately known.

That's when Carpenter got out of his vehicle, ran into Mile Square Park and went into a small lake on the northeast corner of the park.

A police dog ran after Carpenter and bit him. Officers then placed him in cuffs and detained him.

Carpenter was interrogated by police and booked on homicide charges after receiving medical clearance. He is currently being held without bail at the Anaheim Police Department Temporary Detention Facility.
