GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- The grandson of an elderly couple found dead in their Glendale home was arrested for murder.

Nathaniel Scheiern, 34, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Thursday on two counts of murder and taken to Los Angeles County Jail.

Authorities said he was in a serious car accident on the 5 Freeway on June 25 and had been treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia. He was taken into custody upon his release.

The victims, identified as William and Verna Scheiern, were found dead Sunday at about 9:30 a.m. at their house in the 600 block of Alexander Street. The manner of death has not been released.

Glendale police believe the victims were killed sometime before Nathaniel Scheiern's accident.

Neighbors say Nathaniel Scheiern had been living with the couple for about a year.
