San Juan Capistrano apartment fire: 2nd victim dies

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (KABC) -- A 20-year-old woman has become the second victim to die in the San Juan Capistrano apartment fire.

Officials say Maricela Sanchez died Wednesday night at UCI Medical Center. Her 3-year-old son, Jaiden Liborio, died from his injuries on Tuesday.

Her 2-year-old son remains hospitalized in grave condition, and their grandmother was hospitalized in critical condition.

The fire broke out around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday on the 26500 block of La Zanja Street. Three women and six children were taken to local hospitals.

Firefighters determined the blaze was sparked by an unsupervised child playing with a lighter in the living room while other family members slept.

Authorities say there were no smoke alarms in the four-bedroom unit, which was shared by 17 people. The city says it does inspections if someone complains about occupancy, but it didn't receive any complaints.
